Save the Internet and Boycott these Companies

Note: This paragraph that appeared in an article on netmagizine really sums up how this act could be used to specifically attack alternative media!

Suw Charman-Anderson, a social software consultant and writer, told us that SOPA is too broad, fails to understand the technology it’s trying to control, and would have some dreadful unintended consequences: “It seeks to give copyright holders the power to insist that online advertising networks or credit card processing services sever their relationship with any website, simply by pointing the finger. They would be able to undermine a website’s business without any judicial oversight, leaving sites vulnerable to false and malicious accusations.”

The following are companies that signed this letter which was written in support of the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, which is the House’s equivalent of the PROTECT IP Act, which I have previously exposed as China-style internet censorship on steroids.

I encourage everyone to not only boycott these companies but flood them with letters, e-mails and phone calls telling them why exactly you are boycotting them.

SOPA would put completely legitimate sites, like End the Lie and countless other alternative news outlets at risk of being shut down, along with literally any site that freely allows users to post content.

That includes YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, Blogger, Craigslist, Dropbox and literally any website or service that allows users to upload content.

The United States Attorney General can not only seek court orders against “foreign infringing sites,” meaning any website with a non-U.S. domain name, but can also demand that internet service providers (ISPs) would have to cut off access to the site by not resolving domain name requests.

Furthermore, if served with one of the Attorney General’s court orders, search engines would have to remove any links to the site, payment networks would have to stop all payments to the site from U.S. customers and advertising networks would be forced to stop serving advertisements about the website or for the website.

But wait, it gets even worse. SOPA would require that within five days of receiving an allegation by a copyright holder, payment services and advertising networks would have to cut off all business with the site either U.S. based or foreign.

All the copyright holder has to do is allege that the site is “dedicated to the theft of property,” and if the payment provider and advertising networks don’t cease business within five days, the copyright holder can file a private lawsuit against the site compelling the payment service and others to cut off relations.

Furthermore, The Atlantic reports that the definition of “dedicated” in this bill “has little relation to common usage,” and in addressing the bill they characterize it as “dangerous.”

As experts in the technical, operational, academic and research communities who are the leading domain name system (DNS) designers, operators, and researchers who have also published numerous peer-reviewed academic studies regarding the architecture and security of the DNS have pointed out, this will create major cybersecurity and other technical concerns that did not exist previously.

The above linked technical whitepaper regarding the PROTECT IP Act also quite interestingly points out that the DNS filters could be easily circumvented, essentially making one of the biggest parts of the bill null and void.

The thing that the House and Senate don’t seem to realize is that there will always be online pirates and they will always find a way around whatever roadblocks are put in their way.

The issue is that this can and likely will be used to target important platforms for sharing information like YouTube and blog platforms like WordPress and Blogger.

All it would take is for a copyright holder to find one bit of infringing content and then it could very well be the end of the website, despite the massive amounts of legitimate content.

We must remember that major websites like YouTube and blog platforms are quite skilled and hasty when it comes to removing infringing content from their websites.

SOPA would also endanger the entire spirit of the internet which has pioneered social media and free expression, giving a platform to writers like myself who might otherwise be sidelined by the establishment media.

If you care about the internet, free speech and the future of sharing information with the world, I beg of you: take action and boycott these companies and make it clear why you will be boycotting them and telling everyone you know to do the same.

Please do not forget to contact your Congressperson and Senator to ask if they are supporting either bill and tell them why you think it would be a horrible idea for them to do so.

Hopefully we, as the collective users of the internet, can create a large enough buzz to shut down these bills before they get major support.

If “We the People” still have any power in this country, we need to flex it now when it really matters!

Report: Russia warships to enter Syria waters in bid to stem foreign intervention

haaretz
Russian warships are due to arrive at Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian news agency said on Thursday, indicating that the move represented a clear message to the West that Moscow would resist any foreign intervention in the country's civil unrest.

Also on Friday, a Syrian official said Damascus has agreed "in principle" to allow an Arab League observer mission into the country.

But the official said Friday that Syria was still studying the details. The official asked not to be named because the issue is so sensitive.

The Arab League suspended Syria earlier this week over its deadly crackdown on an eight-month-old uprising. The 22-member body has proposed sending hundreds of observers to the country to try to help end the bloodshed.

The report came a day after a draft resolution backed by Arab and European countries and the United States was submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, seeking to condemn human rights violations in the on-going violence in Syria.

Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia were among Arab states that joined Germany, Britain, and France to sponsor the draft submitted to the assembly's human rights committee. In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the U.S. would sign on as a co-sponsor of the resolution.

The draft demanded an end to violence, respect of human rights and implementation by Damascus of a plan of action of the Arab League.

The move comes as clashes escalated in Syria and after Russia and China used their veto in October to block a Security Council resolution that would have condemned the Syrian government of President Bashir for the violence.

Such a veto is not applicable in the 193-nation assembly, which will consider the issue after the human rights committee reports back to it.

The UN says more than 3,500 people have been killed since unrest erupted in spring against Assad.

A Glimpse Into Israeli Nuclear Madness

Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 7:05AM AuthorGilad Atzmon

Introduction by Gilad Atzmon: Please read the following Haaretz report and ask yourself why does Israel need so many nuclear bombs? Why does it need ‘transcontinental missiles’? Why does the Jewish State think it terms of ‘second strike nuclear option’?
I am afraid that the answer is pretty devastating. Israel defines itself as the Jewish State. It is shaped by Jewish culture and driven by Jewish ideology. Israeli militarized madness is devastatingly consistent with the Biblical Samson story.
God granted Samson supernatural strength in order to combat his enemies but it didn’t take long before he killed himself in action while committing a genocide. 'Let me die with the Philistines!' (Judges 16:30) says Samson as he pulls down the temple killing thousands of elders, women and children. Devastatingly enough, ‘suicidal genocide’ is well imbued in the Israeli strategic and tactical vision.
But Israel is also driven by a unique collective mental condition namely the Pre Traumatic Stress Disorder (Pre-TSD). Israel’s actions in the present are shaped by a future imaginary phantasmic trauma.
I guess that the combination of Samson’s ideology, Pre TSD and hundreds of nuclear warheads may as well mean an inevitable disaster.

Report: Israel seeking to upgrade its nuclear weapons capabilities

http://www.haaretz.com

Israel is extending the range of its Jericho 3 missiles and upgrading its sea-based cruise missiles, according to an independent U.K. commission report published in the Guardian.

Israel is working on improving its nuclear weapons capabilities, according to a report by the independent Trident commission in the United Kingdom that was published in the Guardian newspaper on Monday.
According to the report in the Guardian, Israel is extending the range of its Jericho 3 land-to-land missiles so they will have the capabilities of transcontinental missiles.
Transcontinental missiles are generally thought of as missiles with ranges of about 5,000 miles.
The Guardian also reported that Israel is also striving to improve and expand the capabilities of its cruise missiles, designed to be launched from submarines. Israel currently has three submarines and two more are under construction in Germany. Israel and Germany are holding talks about the construction of a sixth submarine.
According to foreign media reports, Israel's submarines are meant to give Israel a "second strike" nuclear option, meaning that Israel can strike back with nuclear weapons from submarines at hidden locations at sea even if its nuclear weapons stored on land are harmed in an enemy nuclear strike.
According to the report in the Guardian, the world's nuclear states are planning to spend more than $800 billion in the coming years to modernize and upgrade their nuclear arsenals. The United States itself will spend $700 billion dollars on such projects. Other countries that will reportedly invest in upgrading their nuclear arsenals are Russia, China, Pakistan, India, Israel, France and Britain.

British police surveillance system can turn off mobile phones

Police in London possess a surveillance technology that sounds like something straight out of science fiction: a mobile GSM device that pretends to be a cellular tower, tricking nearby phones into connecting to it, then intercepting all their communications.

The system was developed by the British firm Datong plc, according to The Guardian, which noted that the U.S. Secret Service and a number of Middle Eastern regimes also patronize the company.
The signal this device projects covers an area for 10 miles around, and the variety of data it can produce is specific enough to track the exact location of any mobile device on the network. It can even be used to shut off all mobile devices in its range.

The full range of its capabilities are classified, The Guardian added, and Datong plc did not comment on the initial report. The Metropolitan Police refused to say when or where the device has been used, if at all.
Documents seen by the British paper show the police paid £143,455 for the device in 2008-2009. The same firm has won over $1.6 million in U.S. contracts between 2004 and 2009, The Guardian said.

It’s not clear whether the technology was used during the riots that gripped London and other British cities earlier this year after police killed a young man who they claimed was involved in a drug deal.
During the unrest, British authorities threatened to cut off Blackberry messaging service, in a scene that evoked similar actions taken against protesters this year by authorities in Egypt and Oakland, California.

Why Should You Be Tobacco Free?

By VA Center for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention

Quitting smoking is the single most important thing you can do to improve your health and protect the health of your family members. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Using tobacco causes many diseases and affects your overall health. Quitting smoking or other forms of tobacco has benefits in the short- and long-term for you and your loved ones.

All forms of tobacco are harmful.  This includes cigars, pipes, snuff, snus, chewing tobacco and electronic or smokeless cigarettes.

Tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke kill approximately 443,000 people in the United States each year. It is the largest cause of preventable illness and death in the United States.

Tobacco use has been shown to be the cause of:
  • Cancers
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Complications of pregnancy
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Secondhand smoke is associated with:
  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  • Acute lung infections, ear problems
  • More frequent and severe asthma attacks in children
Even when people aren’t smokers, exposure to secondhand smoke can cause them to develop heart disease and lung cancer.

Nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work are 20%—30% more likely to develop heart disease or lung cancer.

Breathing secondhand smoke has immediate harmful effects on your health and increases the risk of heart attack. People who already have heart disease are at especially high risk.

There is no level of secondhand smoke that is risk-free. Even brief exposure can be dangerous.
Talk to your VA health care provider about help with quitting smoking, including getting medication to improve your chances of quitting and a referral to a VA smoking cessation clinic.
Good things happen as soon as you quit. You will:
  • Have more energy and breathe easier.
  • Save money that you can spend on other things.
  • Find that your clothes, car, and home smell better.
  • Have fewer wrinkles, and no stains on your skin and nails.
  • Discover that food smells and tastes better.
  • Feel good about quitting.
  • Protect your family members and friends from secondhand smoke.
If you are pregnant and quit smoking, your baby will:
  • Be healthier.
  • Get more oxygen.
  • Be less likely to be born too soon.
  • Be more likely to come home from the hospital on the same day that you come home.
  • Have fewer colds and ear infections.
  • Cough and cry less.
  • Have fewer asthma and wheezing problems.

NATO will not dare to attack Syria

NATO Secretary General has dismissed the prospect of any military intervention in Syria by the Western alliance.

Addressing reporters on Monday during a joint news conference in Tripoli with Chairman of Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, NATO's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen reiterated that any military action within Syria by the Western alliance forces is out of the question.

Rasmussen's remarks came in the wake of a recent warning by the Syrian leader, who cautioned the West that any intervention to divide Syria would break up the entire region.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Ali al-Ahmed, director of the Institute for (Persian) Gulf Affairs ([P]IGA) from Washington, to discuss the issue further.

Press TV: Are you surprised at NATO's announcement that they would not intervene in Syria?

al-Ahmed: No, I am not surprised because the situation in Syria is way different than that of Libya. Syria is much more stable and the security forces are united with the government. Secondly, Syria -neighboring Israel- gives the Syrian government greater leverage to push back the Western pressures -in addition to the support of Russia and China. So I think the situation is different; they was an attempt to get the UN Security Council to condemn Syria and to start the process [of] allowing the NATO to attack Syria but that has really stalled in the UN Security Council and the Arab League produced an initiative that is helping the Syrian government stile off the protest there.

Press TV: What do you think is the criteria for NATO? We saw how they intervened in Libya, but what we see taking place in Yemen, for example, with more and more people being killed every day; what is the determining factor for NATO to decide if they are going to interfere in a conflict or not?

al-Ahmed: NATO, to be sure, has not intervened in Libya for humanitarian reasons. This must be clear to the viewers and to the world that it was not the criterion to intervene in Libya. After all, the majority of the casualties in Libya [was] due to the bombings of NATO airplanes. In Yemen, as you mentioned, the situation is no different from that of Libya; however, the NATO and the Western governments have not raised the possibility of taking action -even political action. The Saleh regime in Yemen continues to do what he is doing without any challenge or major criticisms from the Western governments, from NATO specifically.

So these decisions [in these situations] are not made based on a humanitarian basis, it is based on political and geo-political reason; in terms of Libya it was economic, the decision-making process in Syria, I think, is much more complicated and [it is] much more difficult to try to unseat the Syrian government or attack Syria because I think there will be an implosion in the whole region (Middle East) and of course NATO is extremely worried about that effect on Israel, so they don't want anything to broaden this conflict further in Syria so we can say that this conflict, at least in the near future, will not include NATO or any Western governments attacking or intervening militarily in Syria.

Press TV: Let's look at the NATO in general. One of the reasons for their involvement, they said, was for humanitarian purposes but, as you have pointed out, there were more civilian causalities after they got involved. Who will hold them responsible? Every day, it seems more clear that practically a massacre has taken place in Sirte and of course in other parts of the country. Who will hold NATO accountable?

al-Ahmed: The reality is that there is nobody who can hold NATO responsible for any of the casualties that have taken place either directly by the bombings that NATO airplanes conducted or [for its] help in allowing the massacre of civilians in Sirte or other parts of Libya, so there is no push in international law that allows anyone to raise this flag and this is the reality.

House of Rothschild vs U.S. Presidents

ROTHSCHILDS TO BRING AMERICA TO ITS KNEES!!

“Very pleased we have entered into relations again with American Government” -Rothschilds, 1878

I'd say we're almost there, thanks to the predatory activities of those Zionist owned, Jewish run Wall Street banks and the Zionist owned, Jewish run Federal Reserve.

In 1878, the Rothschilds were back in business with the US government (after having been chased out of DC by Andrew Jackson in the 1830′s), as detailed by this cable discussing the Rothschild refinancing of American debt:
Messrs. Rothschild & Sons to Mr. Sherman.
[Cable message.]

April 12,1878.
Hon. John Sherman,
Secretary of the Treasury, Washington D. C.:

Very pleased we have entered into relations again with American Government. Shall do our best to make the business successful.

ROTHSCHILDS.
The Zionist owned, Jewish run Federal Reserve is illegal and unlawful, and has been that way since it was spawned.

You can't change the Constitution by simply passing a law, there has to be a Constitutional Convention and any changes have to be voted into an Amendment by a super-majority of the Congress and the States.

Besides stealing trillions of dollars of American wealth thru debt and inflation, the Fed has caused economic recessions and recently, even Fed head Bernanke admitted the Fed caused the first Great Depression..... any guesses as to who caused this 'Second Great Depression?'

The Fed needs to be closed down, and since it has been engaging in unlawful criminal activities since 1914, that means it's a continuing conspiracy and ALL the assets obtained as a result of that criminal activity of the private banking families that own the Fed can and should be confiscated.

Not only is the Fed illegal, but the 1913 Income Tax Amendment, that was allegedly approved by the necessary number of states, was passed into law fraudulently, but the bankster gangsters knew they needed to start picking our pockets to line theirs, using the soon to be created 'Creature from Jekyll Island,' the Federal Reserve.

Just think what we could do with an extra 300-400 billion dollars a year we'd save by NOT paying the Fed gangsters interest.

Interest that we are forced to pay to borrow OUR own money.

Second Look at the Federal Reserve by Edward Griffin 1 of 7

Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magician's secrets are unveiled. Here is a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, the pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A boring subject? Just wait. You'll be hooked in five minutes. It sounds like a detective story, which it really is, but it's all true. Based on Mr. Griffin's book of the same title, this address will shatter your old ideas about money and change the way you view the world. 1998 lecture.

Like the old saying goes, "Follow the Money," and the trail of our plundered wealth leads to the world's #1 terrorist state, Apartheid Israel, a nation so in love with and indebted to the Rothschilds that they've named towns, parks, streets and used the plundered wealth of other nations to build the Israeli Supreme Court building and their congressional building, the Knesset.

America or Israel?

By Issa Khalaf
President Obama’s descent to Israel-groveling was fast and furious, considering it’s been a short time from his June 2009 Cairo speech to his September 2011 UN speech.  MJ Rosenberg dubbed Obama as the most Israel-subservient president ever: “Obama isn’t lying about his ‘pro-Israel’ record… This administration has been the most one-sided supporter of everything Israel asks for since 1948.  There is no competition.  Not even George W Bush comes close.”  Maybe, but it’s clear this president, as every president before him, will do anything to get re-elected.  What humiliation: the American president, elected by wide mandate, rendered supine by a pair of fanatics like Benjamin Netanyahu and his gloating neo-fascist cohort Avigdor Lieberman.  The road to Washington runs through Tel Aviv.

There has never (yes, “never”) been, since at least the 1940s but unquestionably since 1967, “honest” brokerage from Washington or at least, if insistence on honesty is misinformed or naively misplaced, temporary impartiality for the sake of US interests.  There is a yawning gap between the fiction of US pressure on Israel and the reality of capitulation to Israeli demands.  American presidents have not had the political will to use their national representation to challenge Israel for the sake of US interests.  The US has always presumed to be able to manage and quiet Palestinian and Arab interest or opposition, usually by initiating activity towards mediation and peace process, but without ever exerting the required pressure on its ally Israel.  The notion of American “pressure” on Israel has always been a tactic to mollify Arab frustration, ever holding out the promise of just resolution of conflict.

There has never been a Zionism desiring peace, only the erasure of the Palestinian national presence from historic Palestine and resolve to realize the Holy Land’s unblemished “Judaization.”  (The Israeli state or elite is not interested in genuine peace, and those, like MJ Rosenberg, who point out that the Israeli public supports a Palestinian state by a significant majority fail to mention that this in effect means a Bantustan state requiring little to no Israeli compromise.  With the exception of a small Israeli minority, the majority just want the pesky Palestinians to disappear from their lives.)

There has never been “national unity” among perennially, hopelessly factionalized Palestinian elites and leaderships, resolved to monopolize Palestinian politics, and who’ve historically been as much of a detriment to their people as of help.

The only honest part of this dismal reality, for over a century, is the unbendable dignity and resistance of the Palestinian people and their current historical willingness to coexist in peace and mutual respect with those who displaced them and continue to dispossess and torment them.

Washington’s frantic, fulminating response to the Palestinians’ UN bid, its determination to preserve its monopoly and management of the “dispute,” is neither startling nor new.  The American diplomatic, political, economic, and military machine is set on autopilot in behalf of Israel—the Palestinians, the distressed American people, the decline of US power, economic bankruptcy, genuine US interests, and the Middle East be damned.  This of course won’t last much longer as the US strategic role, more accurately domination, in the Middle East is losing ground, its respect vanishing worldwide.

In any case, it may be that the Palestinian leadership’s full UN membership bid far from represents a clean break from bilateral negotiations whose central function is enabling Israel to proceed with its colonization and annexations unabated.  The Palestinians accepted, however reluctantly, a deferment on a Security Council vote, allowing the “Quartet” time to convince both sides to restart “peace talks” by devising a framework for renewed negotiations toward a deal at the end of 2012 (in time for US presidential elections).  The Israelis of course will not accept “preconditions” while the Palestinians insist on a halt to colonial settlement construction and 1967 lines as the basis of negotiations.

The Palestinian calculation, in addition to fears of US retribution in the form of vital aid cut-off (which can be catastrophic for Palestinian livelihood), is that this will break the deadlock, perhaps lead to an exertion of pressure on Israel.  But this, a way out for them via meaningful negotiations, is a forlorn hope from a leadership whose only self-justification for existence is the two-state, peace process industry.  That twenty-year industry’s brief is interminable engagement with frameworks and mechanisms rather than the substance of peace.

All this craziness in the service of not cornering Washington into exercising its veto, which it realizes will weaken and isolate it, along with its reckless, destabilizing partner Israel, further.

Being open to negotiations is smart if, indeed, the Palestinians adhere to a synergistic strategy, based on an uncompromising set of principles, willing to eject without hesitation that component which does not work (bilateralism) and forge ahead with that which does, or has a better chance of modest success (multilateralism).

But vital components of this strategy are missing, including political and national unity and democratic inclusion of civil society.  The decades-long resistance of the PLO/PA to embracing grassroots democracy is a predictable outcome of believing the US can deliver.  The leadership, concerned with its privileges and power and its prerogative to undertake and dabble in any political or diplomatic initiative it deems justified, cannot easily extricate itself from its Washington dependency and grip, accept that the Palestinian strategy has been a monumental failure and resort to the undiluted democratic will of its people.

The options of going to the General Assembly for collective recognition of a Palestinian state to add to the current 114 or to “upgrade” Palestinian observer status will have to wait, except that the Palestinian strategy includes piecemeal upgrade, as the recently successful application for full membership in UNESCO (and presumably other UN agencies), which has Washington going ballistic, attests.  The Palestinians are apparently not about to let multilateralism based on international law and UN resolutions quietly die to accommodate American-Israeli designs whose implicit or unspoken assumption is that the Palestinians do not and should not enjoy the right to legally and diplomatically advance their cause or defend themselves against military occupation.

The argument that a hopelessly Israel Lobby-captive US will move aside for others to make Palestine-Israel peace is not very realistic, at least at this period; emerging nations, unless sporting a unified, coordinated position and overcoming divergent interests, do not have the power and influence to implement a UN based peace settlement.  Nor is the EU, a key, though not very unified player, willing to subordinate or imperil its inter-Atlantic strategic partnership with the US, the EU’s conundrum a barometer of how strongly and to what lengths the US will defend and shield Israel.  The obstacle to advancing a fair settlement requiring Israeli adherence to international law by emerging nations and the EU—i.e., influential states in the international community—is and has always been this: the awesome asymmetry of military power between Israel and the Palestinians, and less so between it and its neighbors, underwritten by the open-ended guarantee of US military power.

What explains this Israel right or wrong lunacy, this congenitally dysfunctional advocacy in behalf of a foreign state?  To make the rationally contingent argument that the US would not continue along this path if it did not think that its decades-long Israel-first policy is a success for itself and its partner, is a partial explanation that neglects a larger, more complex context.  That context is not only the presumed alignment of US and Israeli hegemonic goals, but also lies in the domestic front.

US behavior flows from American historical, ideological, cultural, and economic foundations.  However, this is confused by the fact that the US and Israel have become politically and strategically indistinguishable.  American support for Israel is multi-causal including imperial folly and great power hubris, but unconditional support is a product of domestic influences.  It’s clear that the “special relationship”—the depth, effectiveness, and pervasiveness of Israel’s influence in American politics, the reflexivity of US support from president to Congress, governor to state legislature—is obvious and puzzling, even bizarre.

This reality is due not only to the vaunted Israel Lobby, but also to the American media that serves as Israel’s uninhibited supporter and promoter.  There is no deviation of opinion, across the entire spectrum of American media, local to national, including films and television, from the sustain-Israel-first-at-all-costs consensus.

If the American elite and policymaking establishment indeed “thinks” or presumes that its policies have been a success, it is certainly not because of objective reality.  In addition to the imperial thrust, it is because of an enormously dominant pro-Israel ideology and narrative, and a false perception perpetuated by a powerful, organized Lobby and its pervasive support by the mass media and cultural image-makers.  Israel’s influential intellectual supporters, conservative and liberal, developed the ideological rationales for the “special relationship” propagated through their dominance on research institutes, think tanks and in the media, and through their common presence as officeholders, appointees, and advisers.  Most of the American intellectual class has been intimidated into blather on the topic of Israel and Zionism.

Israel and its interests became effectively institutionalized in the American socio-political system after decades of this Israel-influence build up in American politics, society, media, and culture.

In a rational world, US interests require, as they did since 1967, a viable, not a sham, Palestinian state that satisfies the Palestinians, dramatically reduces tensions through the normalization of Arab-Israeli relations, rolls back religious-political extremism, and generally works as a stabilizing factor in the Middle East.  To settle Palestine-Israel justly and fairly is absolutely vital to maintaining any semblance of US influence in the Middle East.  In a rational world, the Palestinians’ eminently reasonable UN bid is the best that could happen to and for the US.

Such a balanced approach is something the American people, despite the mighty efforts to control the official discourse, intrinsically understand.  Support for Israel is neither a fixed determinism nor a deep cultural phenomenon regardless of evangelical and neo-conservative fervor, or the support of mainly white Republicans who internalize Israel’s mythos as their own.  Support for Israel is the fruit of unrelenting organization and pressure.  Majorities of Americans, in poll after poll, reject taking sides in the Palestine-Israel conflict, oppose Israel’s settlement building, and support the idea of fairly resolving the conflict.  A majority even rejects going to war for Israel’s sake should it and Iran engage in open conflict, while half would not use US troops to help Israel even if attacked by a neighbor.

This is encouraging.  Even while confounded by the Israel narrative beaming through their radios and television screens and printed in their newspapers, Americans simply desire neutrality.  Even in the context of a pro-Israel media and politicians, these typical survey results belie the claim of monolithic cultural or religious foundations in support of Israel, or of an exceptional or special relationship or great public commitment, love, or bond.  This suggests that, were an American president to “draw a line in the sand” in dealing with Israel, the American public would back him or her by a solid majority, albeit opposition hypocrisy and pandering to the Lobby remains a problem for any fair-minded government or politician.

The false fusion and institutionalization of American and Israeli interests may well lead to a disaster for the Israelis and Palestinians as well as the region.  At the same time, the assumed categorical permanency of support for Israel may erode faster than anyone believes as the US inevitably confronts its own great crises in the cause of American, not foreign, interests.

Pentagon prepares for economic warfare

THE scene: the war games suite of the mightiest military power in the world.
The guests were assembled in the Warfare Analysis Laboratory, surrounded by uniformed officers from the highest levels of the Pentagon and a dizzying array of screens normally used to simulate nuclear world war.
The gentlemen were called to order and the games began.

"If you imagine the war room in Dr. Strangelove, you're not far off," says participant James Rickards.
Yet this was no traditional battle game, but rather the Pentagon's first economic war game, and the authorities are loath to talk about it.

Economic war? It sounds preposterous. Except it gets less so with every dollar of debt run up by the US.
Behind the scenes, the military are worried about the market. For who owns much of this debt? China, the US's most powerful rival and threat. And that makes America vulnerable to a new kind of bloodless but ruthless war.

Rickards is not a soldier but a banker. He was joined in the war game by dozens of his Wall Street colleagues, flown in from Manhattan to this bunker at the Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland for the two-day event in 2009, when the Pentagon started to get really alarmed.

The group was split into five teams: America, Russia, China, Pacific Rim, and a "grey team", representing shady outfits such as terrorist organisations. They were sent into "bunker rooms" and told to use financial or economic tools - currency, debt, stocks, gold - to bring their enemies to their knees. Everything was conducted via computer, and they could be as devious and ruthless as they liked. The bankers liked.
"These people would normally never come together. But there is nothing more fun than to take a Wall Street guy and tell him to be a bad guy," says Mr Rickards, a former senior executive who was involved in planning and executing the war game.

When the game was halted, the result left the military men quiet and sobered. Why did the bankers scare the soldiers? The answer lies in the way the world is now interconnected as never before.

Over the past few years, China has been buying up US government debt and is now its biggest holder. If China were to dump this debt, it would totally screw with the economy. China could, hypothetically, win any number of foreign policy objectives by making it impossible for you to pay your mortgage.

Paul Bracken is a professor and expert in private equity at the Yale School of Management who serves on government advisory committees at the US Department of Defence. He was one of the key players behind the 2009 economic war game, and the smaller versions that have been played out since.

"The atmosphere that day was one of surprise at the magnitude of the threat," he says.

"The Pentagon people were used to dealing in terms of military battles: how many ships, how many missiles. This opened up whole new strategies."

Of course, economic warfare is not new. God's plagues on the Egyptian pharaoh's crops, as reported in the Book of Exodus, were an early skirmish. Winston Churchill created a Ministry of Economic Warfare, to run as a "new instrument of war" against Hitler. Embargoes and sanctions have been targeted at dozens of countries, from South Africa to the former Soviet Union.

But this is different. The markets are now global, the holdings in each other's finances deep, and the technical ability to manipulate them instantaneous. In the 1970s the West feared that its enemies had their fingers on a nuclear button. The modern equivalent may be China's ability to press the button on US Treasury bills.
China is, Professor Bracken says, "the huge threat", but Russia, with its oil and gas, has shown no compunction in waging economic war on its neighbours, and could do so on a larger scale.

Another possibility is that major oil-producing countries could destabilise America by switching to euros instead of dollars as the currency in which oil is priced - so-called "petro-dollar warfare". Or a terrorist organisation might trigger a financial crash via some kind of shady hedge fund or computer attack.
What the economic war game showed Professor Bracken was that military and economic decision-making has to be more unified. Banks and bonds are now weapons, just as much as bombs. "That makes the military nervous, as they had always been in charge of operations. That's why they know they need to understand this," Professor Bracken says.

Mr Rickards says that, "If you're going to confront the US military, you would spend billions. But if you can do so just as effectively in financial space, and it would cost less, why not?"

Perhaps Britain felt a taste of this last year, with some stockmarket shocks that wiped millions off three British companies. BT lost pound stg. 969 million ($1.5 billion) on one afternoon in August, Next lost pound stg. 275m. Security services had to probe the possibility that it was not technical faults, as initially supposed, but a concerted attack by a nation state.

John Bassett, a fellow of the Royal United Services Institute, says the British government is just waking up to the new order.

"If those were deliberate attacks on the London stockmarket, it was highly unlikely to be a criminal gang, much more likely an economic rival," he says. "This is a ruthless competition for global economic supremacy, and the West isn't winning."

At the end of that Pentagon session, the 80-odd players returned from their bunkers and assessed the damage.

China won, without so much as reaching for a gun. And the soldiers looked at each other and wondered if it was still only a game.

Wall St. and other "Occupy" Protests Should Re-Brand as "Anti-Oligarchy"

Some of the biggest men in the United States are afraid of something. They know there is a power somewhere, so organised, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it. – President Woodrow Wilson

The "Occupy" protests and other demonstrations across the US and Europe are reported as being "anti-capitalist", "anti-banker", "anti-EU" or simply "anti-government".

But these labels will just not do.

The oligarchs who bring us our successive financial crises and wars will be getting rid of capitalism pretty soon.

Unfortunately they have no intention of disappearing with it.

We know that the entire financial system is going to collapse in fairly short order.

It must.

The 'more-debt' solution to irresolvable debt problems is a stalling strategy and everybody knows it.

A real solution to the nightmare that the financial oligarchs have created for us would end their system, so that ain't going to happen.......just yet.

First we are going to endure crises like we have never seen before.

Currencies will collapse.

There will be a major and very terrible war, a primary purpose of which will be to make survivors so desperate that they will be glad to accept anything on offer that delivers peace.

When it is over capitalism will go.......but the same people will remain in charge.

Therefore there is little point in branding oneself an 'anti-capitalist' (because Messrs. Rothschild and Rockefeller will soon be making common cause with you)

When the time comes we will be expected not to notice that the new, much better, much fairer system on offer will continue to be run by the same banking oligarchy that caused all the problems and nearly destroyed planet earth in the first place.

This trajectory is well laid out by Richard North in a recent article here.

We can expect a new Godless tyranny. A 'humanitarian' tyranny.

So let us be clear:

The system we call 'democracy' is really government by agents representing the interests of a financial oligarchy.

'Capitalism' is government by oligarchy.

(Wall-Street funded) Soviet 'Communism' was government by a tyrannical oligarchy.

All these disastrous systems were disasters because they were structurally designed to represented the interests of a ruling elite rather than the genuine interests of ordinary people.

So,

WHEN THE NEXT OLIGARCHICAL SYSTEM IS OFFERED TO US, ALL HUMANITY MUST RECOGNISE IT FOR WHAT IT IS AND REJECT IT.

TOTALLY.

What protesters need to set their minds and hearts against is the continuing dominating influence of a financial juggernaut that is, at its core, led by a small elite of extraordinarily powerful, corrupt and self-serving oligarchs.

Think it through, be clear about this and explain to everybody you meet.

Our system is not democratic, it is oligarchical and.....

WE ARE, FIRST AND FOREMOST, ANTI-OLIGARCHY.

Sheriff: Time For Citizens To Arm Themselves

Sheriff Chuck Wright Doesn’t Hold Back

The Spartanburg County Sheriff is known for speaking his mind, and at a news conference on Monday, he didn't hold back his anger and frustration after a woman was attacked in a park over the weekend.Investigators said 46-year-old Walter Lance grabbed a woman who was walking her dog in Milliken Park on Sunday afternoon. They said Lance choked the woman, made her take off her clothing and tried to rape her. (Full Story)Lance is in custody and was denied bond on Monday.

Unedited: Sheriff Wright’s News Conference
Sheriff Chuck Wright opened his news conference by saying, "Our form of justice is not making it."He said, "Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it."Wright said Lance had been charged numerous times with crimes against women, and other crimes such as resisting arrest and escape. Wright said Lance had been on probation for a federal gun charge. He referred to Lance repeatedly as an "animal," and expressed his disgust about Lance's long record and the attack.Wright said Lance has had more than 20 charges dating back to 1983.
  SURVEY
How do you feel about concealed weapons?
Wright said Lance has been in jail more often than he has, and he runs the jail, and he said Lance gets out easier. Wright punctuated it by saying, "And I'm aggravated."He said he doesn't believe every person needs to be kept in jail, but he said, "I don't think this animal deserves to be out in our society, walking alongside our women."Wright said,"Liberals call me and tell me the chain-gang form of justice isn't working. Well, let me inform you, your form of justice isn't working either."He said Lance should not have had the right or opportunity to "violate a good, upstanding woman.""This is a horrific crime," Wright said. "Her life was threatened so many times."
Walter Lance was denied bond.
He said Lance "doesn't fight police or men folk -- he just goes after women." He said Lance is not married because, "No woman can stay married to him because he beats them down too much."Wright said, "It's too bad someone with a concealed weapons permit didn't walk by. That would fix it." He said people are tired of doing the right thing and criminals getting away with their actions. He said several times, "I want you to get a concealed weapons permit."At one point, Wright held up a fanny pack and said, "They make this right here where you can conceal a small pistol in them. They got one called The Judge that shoots a .45 or a .410 shell. You ain't got to be accurate; you just have to get close."Wright said, "I'm tired of looking at victims saying, 'There's life after this' … I'm tired of saying, 'We're sorry, we can't keep them in jail.'"Wright said in his view, gun control is, "Is when you can get your barrel back on the target quick. That’s gun control."
Milliken Park
Wright said the attack is not the fault of Millken Park. He said, "It's a nice place for families."He said officers patrol the area all the time and respond to various calls there. He said, "Don't blame anyone for having an animal on their property … We can't get it all."He encouraged women to walk in groups, and he ended by saying again, "I want you to get a concealed weapons permit. Don't get Mace. Get a firearm."And then he said, "I think I better stop before I get sanctioned."

Pat Buchanan: Occupy Wall Street Is 'Going To End Very, Very Badly'

Pat Buchanan issued a stern warning to Occupy Wall Street this weekend.

In a round-table discussion on 'The McLaughlin Group', host John McLaughlin asked panelists about the future of the movement.

“It’s going to end very, very badly with these folks in the winter and they’re not going to be getting publicity and they’re going to be acting up and acting badly like the worst of the demonstrators in the 60s," Buchanan said. "They’re going to start fighting with the cops.”

Occupy Wall Street took a violent turn this week as Oakland police unleashed tear gas on protesters and injured an Iraq war veteran.

On Saturday, scores were arrested in Denver after protesters clashed with local law enforcement. When cops began to spray Mace on the crowd, several protesters reportedly retaliated by kicking and pushing police.

University Researcher: U.S. topsoil Over 10,000% higher than highest levels found by UC Berkeley

Oct. 31 — Monday morning in Washington D.C., Marco Kaltofen, PE, of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, discussed current issues concerning radiation exposure in Japan.

Kaltofen is a Massachusetts Registered Professional Engineer engaged in the investigation of nuclear material release. He investigated the transport of radioactive particles in his dissertation research at WPI.

Marco Kaltofen, PE, SOURCE: WPI
Here are excerpts from the description for his presentation, ‘Radiation Exposure to the Population in Japan After the Earthquake’:
  • “The Fukushima nuclear accident dispersed airborne dusts that are contaminated with radioactive particles. When inhaled or ingested, these particles can have negative effects on human health that are different from those caused by exposure to external or uniform radiation fields.”
  • “A field sampling effort was undertaken to characterize the form and concentration of radionuclides in the air and in environmental media which can accumulate fallout. Samples included settled dusts, surface wipes, used filter masks, used air filters, dusty footwear, and surface soils.”
  • “Isolated US soil samples contained up to 8 nanoCuries per Kg of radiocesium, while control samples showed no detectable radiocesium.”
Read More: Radiation Exposure to the Population in Japan After the Earthquake
According to UC Berkeley, the highest cesium content in topsoil for each location sampled was fairly consistent throughout California:
  • Sacramento, CA Topsoil on 8/16/2011: Total Cesium @ 2.737 Bq/kg
  • Oakland, CA Topsoil on 9/8/2011: Total Cesium @ 2.55 Bq/kg
  • Alameda, CA Topsoil on 4/6/2011: Total Cesium @ 2.52 Bq/kg
  • San Diego, CA Topsoil on 6/29/2011: Total Cesium @ 2.51 Bq/kg
  • Sonoma, CA Topsoil on 4/27/2011: Total Cesium @ 2.252 Bq/kg
The highest cesium levels of any topsoil measurements by UC Berkeley since the crisis began was 2.737 becquerels/kg in Sacramento. This is is equal to 73.9 picocuries/kg. (Conversion: 27 picocuries = 1 becquerel)

According to Kaltofen, the highest cesium levels detected in U.S. “surface soil” were up to 8 nanoCuries per Kg of radiocesium. This is equal to 8,000 picocuries/kg. (Conversion: 1 nanocurie = 1,000 picocuries)
Kaltofen’s highest findings were up to 108 times greater than the highest findings by UC Berkeley.

Before Kaltofen’s finding, the highest cesium content in US topsoil post-Fukushima was 700 picocuries/kg near Reno at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains by a person affiliated with the University of Nevada. However, this was only preliminary and appears to not have been confirmed. See: 700 pCi/kg of Cesium-137 found in soil from base of Sierra Nevada mountains according to preliminary data

Though we do not know what location in the U.S. Kaltofen’s samples were from (hopefully that information will soon be made available UPDATE: SEE BELOW), we do know that UC Berkeley’s samples were taken in areas that had some of the highest radiation readings in the nation post-Fukushima.

Finally, Kaltofen’s control surface soil samples (known to be unaffected by Fukushima fallout) “showed no detectable radiocesium”, meaning the 8,000 pCi/kg finding of cesium was caused by the triple meltdowns in Japan rather than leftover from atomic weapons tests decades ago.
h/t Fairewinds

UPDATE: The slideshow from Kaltofen’s presentation is now available online via the Fairewinds website. However, it does not provide any specific information on the cesium detection in the US. The only additional mention on this topic is that “US samples had only two isolated Cs-134 and Cs-137 detections in soil.” It shouldn’t take to long before we find out how many US samples were tested, where they were from, and what the results and minimum detectable amounts were.

Libya: revolutionaries turn on each other as fears grow for law and order

Hundreds of revolutionaries fought each other at a hospital in Tripoli early on Monday, in the biggest armed clash between allies since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya: revolutionaries turn on each other as fears grow for law and order: Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters fire at loyalist forces in central Sirte on October 16, 2011
A file photo of Libyan National Transitional Council fighters in action Photo: AFP
The fighting fuelled growing fears that nobody is in control of thousands of swaggering armed men who are still based in Tripoli and that the country's interim government will struggle to impose law and order.
Two people died from bullet wounds and at least seven fighters were injured during a battle that started when militia from the town of Zintan were stopped by guards from the Tripoli Brigade from entering the city's Central Hospital to kill a patient.
The hospital front door and entrance hall were afterwards left pocked with bullets, doctors and patients had to flee the building and two elderly patients died of heart attacks during the shooting, which lasted from about 1am until dawn. Heavy machine guns and anti-aircraft guns were used by both factions, supposed allies who in reality nurse a dangerous rivalry.
The shoot-out started when a group of gunmen arrived at the hospital in search of a man they had shot earlier in the night. Witnesses said the gunmen were drunk, and had come to finish the man off after learning that he had survived and been taken for medical treatment.
Doctors asked them to leave, at which point one of them pulled out a pistol and began shooting.

"He was overpowered, but then hundreds of Zintan men arrived outside the hospital with heavy weapons and shooting started," said Mohamad Hamza, a Tripoli Brigade fighter in charge of security. "We had to call for backup, and our boys came from all over Tripoli.
"We couldn't believe that they were shooting at us. I had to say to them, you are shooting at a hospital, not at Muammar Gaddafi's 32nd Brigade. Eventually, after several hours, a Shaikh came from the mosque and persuaded them to stop and they handed over three of them who started it to Tripoli's military council."
He said one Zintan fighter and a passer-by were killed in shooting, and seven Tripoli Brigade men were injured, two seriously. He said he believed Zintan injured were taken to other hospitals.
The incident will raise pressure on the fragile National Transitional Council to disarm the former rebel fighters who are still at large in Libya's capital, even though they were asked to leave weeks ago and have been ordered to give up their heavy weapons.
The Zintan brigades were some of the most ferocious fighters against Gaddafi's forces and helped lead the attack on Tripoli, but have outstayed their welcome, earning a reputation for mayhem and looting.
Thousands of them have ignored pleas to go, staying put instead of returning to their town in the mountains three hours drive to the south.
The battle came on the day Human Rights Watch warned in a report that the entire population of 30,000 people from the town of Tawargha, near Misurata, has been driven out by former rebels for siding with Gaddafi. There have been reports that some of its men, who are predominantly black-skinned, may have been shot or beaten.
Tripoli's residents fear that there will be more clashes in their city, which is desperate to get back to normality. Mr Hamza, in charge of security at the hospital, said he expected more trouble. "I think it will happen again," he said. "They will be back for revenge."
Peter Cole, Libya analyst with the International Crisis Group, said: “Rivalry between brigades from different cities has not been resolved and it does now pose a threat to Libya’s security.
“This suggests that the National Transitional Council needs to work harder with the militia groups to bring unity among them.”
The fighting came on the day that Nato formally ended operations in Libya.
The military action, unprecedented in setting out from the beginning to win a war while guaranteeing not to use troops to do so, was declared a success by Nato’s chief. “At midnight tonight, a successful chapter in Nato’s history is coming to an end,” Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary-general and a former Danish prime minister, said at a press conference with the interim Libyan president, Mustafa Abdul Jalil.
Libya’s interim leadership meanwhile elected an academic from Tripoli as the country’s new interim prime minister.
Abdel-Rahim al-Keeb was chosen by the National Transitional Council and will appoint a new Cabinet in coming days. The new government is to run Libya in the coming months and to pave the way for general elections.

Revoke Obama’s Peace Prize

Never in living memory has a Noble Peace Prize recipient gone on to cause more death and misery than Barack Obama, who now puts hits on U.S. citizens. His foreign policy "successes," as rated by his supporters, all involve assassinations – he is The Assassinator. Moammar Gaddfi is a singular victim, but so are thousands of Black Libyans and migrants. His killer drones operate in at least six countries, and his Special Forces in more than 75. Meanwhile, WikiLeak’s Julian Assange, who revealed U.S. global crimes, "probably faces a future extradition to the United States when he ought to be honored by the world community." The whole nation of Norway should be mortified.

"The president has presided over one of the most violent eras in the recent history of American international relations."
Every year the Norwegian Nobel Committee bestows its peace prize on esteemed persons and organizations who, "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." In general, recipients are deserving of the honor, with such luminaries as Dr. Martin Luther King and organizations such as Doctors Without Borders among the long list of laureates.
Occasionally however, the committee has a lot to answer for, as was the case when Henry Kissinger was the prize recipient in 1973. He was honored for his role in the negotiations which ended the Vietnam war, but by that time Kissinger’s actions as National Security Adviser and then Secretary of State had caused the deaths of over one million people in Southeast Asia.
Two years ago, true peace makers were dismayed to learn that Barack Obama was named the 2009 peace prize winner. Giddy at the site of a black man becoming president of the United States, the prize nominators lost any collective wisdom they may have had and awarded the prize for peace to the man who oversees a war machine larger than that of the rest of the nations of the world combined and he has subsequently proven that he has no qualms about utilizing it.
Obama did not disappoint the people around the world who were mystified by the choice. In his award speech he essentially said that he should not have been the person receiving the medal on that day. The unworthy winner spent most of his speech talking about the need for war. Orwell’s words, "War is peace," were prescient.
"The prize nominators lost any collective wisdom they may have had and awarded the prize for peace to the man who oversees a war machine larger than that of the rest of the nations of the world combined."
If the Norwegian committee wasn’t listening to critics in 2009, they ought to be questioning their decision now. In 2011 alone, Obama ordered the death of Osama bin Laden without any intention of capturing and trying him. Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen, was never given the due process to which he was entitled, but U.S. drones killed him as surely as the Navy SEALS killed bin Laden.
The president’s killing spree didn’t end with the elder al-Awlaki. His sixteen year old son, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, also an American citizen, was obliterated by a drone just two weeks after his father’s death. Obama claims to have the right to kill American citizens based on secretly drawn up criteria which aside from strategic placed leaks to the media, have not been publicly divulged.
With these killings fresh in the world’s consciousness, the horrific end of Moammar Gaddafi was seen the world over. For those with the stomach to watch, videos of his killing and then his dead, mutilated body were viewed all over the world. His end did not come directly at the hands of the United States, but Barack Obama and his NATO allies were surely responsible. They took it upon themselves to decide the fate of an entire nation, and overthrew one government in favor of another. In the process Libyans were subjected to sanctions and bombing incursions which killed an unknown number of them. Both black Libyans and migrants from other African nation were the targets of lynch mob violence at the hands of the "rebels" supported by Barack Obama.
There are many other examples of the peace prize laureate’s not so peaceful ways. From lies and threats against Iran to ever escalating wars of terror in Somalia and Pakistan, the president has presided over one of the most violent eras in the recent history of American international relations.
"Obama claims to have the right to kill American citizens based on secretly drawn up criteria which aside from strategic placed leaks to the media, have not been publicly divulged."
The Norwegian committee does not have a mechanism to withdraw an award once it is given, but they should seriously consider doing so. If they are truly people of conscience, they must know that they violated the ethos upon which the prize was based when Obama’s name topped the list of nominees.
It is true that combat troops are due to leave Iraq by the end of this year, but only because of an agreement requiring the withdrawal which was signed by George W. Bush. The withdrawal also comes after eight years of terror inflicted upon the Iraqis, and neither man deserves credit for undoing what ought never to have taken place. When the Obama worshippers try to make the case for their useless paeans of praise, it must be pointed out that the Iraqis refused to give the United States military immunity to commit more crimes. The false idol wanted to keep more troops and allow them to continue doing as they pleased, namely killing Iraqis on the flimsiest of whims.
It is curious that people who have genuinely suffered for peace like Mordechai Vanunu have never been honored. Vanunu confirmed that Israel has a secret nuclear stockpile, and that government imprisoned him for eighteen years and continues to keep him under house arrest seven years after his release. Julian Assange and Wikileaks revealed that Iraqi civilians were slaughtered by American troops and that our government told numerous lies to cover up these atrocities. Assange probably faces a future extradition to the United States when he ought to be honored by the world community.
The committee needs to do some serious soul searching and then do what they have never done before. They must inform the president of the United States that he has to return a medal he was given in Oslo in 2009.
Norway, take back that prize!
